Does Saudi Arabia have a Future in Space?

Riyadh, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia | February 12,  2018

In the summer of 1969, the world witnessed the most important event in human history and space science. The Apollo 11 spacecraft launched aboard a Saturn V rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The Saturn V consists of three main stages, and the Apollo spacecraft, which consists of Service, Command and Lunar modules. Aboard the Apollo 11, three astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin. The vehicle launched on July 16, 1969 to and landed on the moon three-day after.

On Saudi Arabia’s side, its relationship with space science began with the launch of Prince Sultan bin Salman into space on July 17, 1985. He was the first Arab-Muslim astronaut to lead the scientific team aboard the space shuttle "Discovery” mission STS-51G.

Since then, Saudi Arabia’s participation in space science remained static without any new effort. Today, Saudi still does not have its own space agency nor a launch site from which to launch rockets from. With that said, there are minor attempts led by the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology.

In this video, Eng. Mishaal Ashemimry wonders: “what is Saudi Arabia waiting for to move forward with its space endeavors?”
